Tulips Made with Cold Porcelain

Create these realistic tulips with this tutorial from Russian artist Antonina Melnichenko. Antonina gives us some unique tips in this detailed, step-by-step photo tutorial, such as using a spoon to lay the petals in as they dry, assuring a cupped shape. She also collects real pollen to glue to her clay flowers!

Commercial cutters and veiners are used to cut both petals and leaves out of cold porcelain. You can make your own cutters or purchase an inexpensive set of flower cutters at Amazon (and other websites) such as the Wilton Gum Paste Flowers Set or one of the special tulip sets shown below that includes a cutter and veiner.

Flower Covered Jar

Select a short glass jar to decorate with cold porcelain following steps in this flower basket tutorial  from Porcelana Fria magazine. This is a good beginners tutorial.  Not many tools needed.  Just shape the flowers and leaves using teardrop-shaped pieces of CP.  When covering the bottom of jar, be careful not to cover the part where you screw the lid (so jar will still function)!

Quick and Easy Flower Magnets

Are you a beginner and need a simple project to get you started with cold porcelain?
Or maybe you need to make a quick gift!
Or maybe you're just a lover of fridge magnets!   ;-)
I came across this easy magnet tutorial from French artist Brigida Clement    She has allowed translation to English, with proper credits to her original, of course.   Please visit her website at Babou Bricole

To create the flower magnets, first tint some cold porcelain dough the flower color of your choice.   Shape into 5 or 6 balls of equal size.   Size of balls depends on size of your magnet.  Make them large enough to make a circle of petals as shown in above photo.

With the modeling tool, mark an indentation in the middle of each ball, flattening each ball into a petal as you make indentation using photo below as an example.  Mold a yellow ball of slightly smaller size and place it in the heart of the flower.   There you have it!   A cute little flower magnet!    Make a whole bunch of these in lots of colors for your own flower garden on a magnet board...or on refrigerator!

Cold Porcelain Tips & Tricks

by Guest Author Kathryn Gray of Templewood Miniatures

Cold Porcelain paste is a lovely medium to work with.  It does not have to be oven baked as it air dries – depending on the air humidity,  it becomes completely dry between 2 – 3 hours.

Cold Porcelain can be rolled and worked  much finer than pastes which have to be oven baked.  It has a shrinkage rate of about 12%.

Cold Porcelain dries out very quickly and must always be wrapped tightly in cling film and then placed in a plastic bag which is then put into an airtight box when not being used.

It is important that a small quantity of white acrylic paint is added to the CP paste as you mix it - even if you intend to colour the paste -  or it will be translucent when it dries.  The semi-transparent characteristic of homemade Cold Porcelain is lovely if you want to make the aerial roots on orchids but not for anything else.  White should be done before any other
